| Hilo is "Life in the Slow Lane" The Home The original home was built in 1956 on land that was once part of the Onomea Sugar Company sugar cane plantation. The plantation manager, when given first choice of lots on which to build his home, selected this particular location. Almost 50 years later, his house has been extensively remodeled by its current owners. Their goal is to create a tropical getaway with modern amenities while retaining a traditional island feel for themselves and their guests. It is with this goal in mind that they welcome you to their island home. The Views From almost every room, you will have panoramic views of the coastline, ocean, Hilo Bay, and spectacular island sunrises. Bring your binoculars. Whales (seasonal), dolphins, and many kinds of birds are in abundance. Also, a variety of ships and boats sail past each day as they ply the inter-island waterways. The Garden If you wish to enjoy the tropical splendor of an island garden, you will have to look no farther than the west side of the home. You will be delighted by many varieties of tropical plants, trees, and flowers. Depending upon the season, you will be able to harvest and enjoy the fruits of the garden which include pineapple, oranges, tangerines, mango, papaya, and avocado. The Living Area The living room is flanked by a floor to ceiling "glass wall" which takes advantage of the beautiful ocean views. On the opposite wall, a huge picture window frames the beauty of the tropical garden and giant magnolia tree. The room is decorated in a casual island style, and the Honduran mahogany hardwood floors that are original to the home have been beautifully restored. Television / Telephone There is a 42 inch flat screen tv with numerous cable channels and a VCR for those who just can't leave the outside world behind. And, if anyone tries to reach you while you are exploring the island, the telephone is equipped with a voice mail system. The Dining Area The dining area is lined with jalousie windows overlooking the tropical garden. While dining, you will hear the soothing sounds of a waterfall in the canyon below. The adjacent sitting area is the spot to relax and lose one's self in the ocean views and pounding surf. The Honduran mahogany floors adorn this area as well. The Kitchen The newly remodeled kitchen is stocked with all the necessities - dinnerware, glassware and stemware, cutlery, cooking utensils and gadgets, coffee maker and blender, microwave, double ovens and dishwasher, etc. Within a few minutes drive are several large supermarkets that can supply Hawaiian, Mexican, Asian, and American food. There is even a Safeway, but the locally owned KTA stores are more fun and feature a large selection of island delicacies such as poke ( [Po keh] - sliced raw fish, seaweed, Hawaiian salt and chili peppers). And don't worry if cooking is not a part of your vacation plan, there are great restaurants in Hilo. The Ocean Suite The Ocean Suite features two walls of windows which boast views of the ocean and coastline. You don't even have to leave the California King size bed in order to watch an arriving cruise ship sail past or to greet the tropical sunrise (if you wish to awaken that early). Or, step onto the lanai and feel the trade winds. In the haven of your suite, you will have a private bathroom and abundant closet space. The Master Suite The Master Suite features an 8-foot sliding glass door which also boasts views of the ocean and coastline. You will be able to step from the sanctuary of the Master Suite onto your private lanai to reflect upon the morning, enjoy the afternoon tradewinds, or to study the shimmer of moonlight on the evening sea. This suite also features a California King size bed, a private bathroom, and abundant closet space. The Laundry A full laundry room is provided for your convenience. All household linens and towels are provided. |
